“Namegarden” is a project by the artists Artem Filatov and Alexei Korsi, realised in the courtyard of a private crematorium in the city of Nizhny Novgorod. The space of the courtyard was turned into a public memorial complex: Filatov designed a garden in which more than 120 species of plants, shrubs and trees were planted; Korsi produced a sound installation — a vocal recitation of the names of human internal organs in Latin. As Artem Filatov explained in an interview with artguide.com, “‘The Garden’ lives on, regardless of whether any human being is present in it. For me, it is an image of symbolic immortality. The musical work, written to a libretto by Alexei Korsi in participation with the composer Evgeny Voronovsky and performed by the opera singer Zoya Petrova, is a modern choral work that goes on forever. Plants germinate and then die. The process doesn’t stop. But this project has another dimension too. This consists in an actualization of the discussion on the theme of an awareness of death and the death industry.”

To support the project, the website namegarden.ru was set up, where users are given the opportunity to dedicate one of the garden plants to a deceased person.
